How the poster boy of Emirati filmmaking became the man

It’s not often you see someone swinging a spiked medieval weapon above their head, these days. It’s even less likely to see that this same person, grinning with mischievous glee, is wearing a tailored Burberry suit and a pair of Dhs5,000 Berluti shoes. But that is the situation I find myself upon walking into Esquire Middle East’s photoshoot with Ali F. Mostafa.

The British Emirati film-maker, director and producer is perhaps best known for directing the first Emirati feature film ‘City of Life’ in 2009.

But he has gone on to do far more and just this month announced he is reteaming with Image Nation Abu Dhabi for his next feature, ‘The Worthy’, set to go into production later this year.

European major Studio Canal has acquired all UK rights to Emirati director Ali F. Mostafa’s road movie From A to B.

The deal, announced during Berlin’s EFM, was negotiated by Arianne Fraser’s Highland Film Group. From A to B, which world premiered last October at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, was co-financed and co-produced by Twofour54 and Image Nation Abu Dhabi. Rotana Film Production is handling the Middle East release of the film, which was produced by Paul Baboudjian, Mohammed Hefzy and Ali F. Mostafa.
